The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is the standard used by Federal statistical agencies in classifying business establishments for the purpose of collecting, analyzing, and publishing statistical data related to the U.S. business economy.
You will want to use NAICS to see where your business idea fits in this classification system. Then you will be able to find statistics related to your concept.
After you find the NAICS for your business idea and look at statistics gathered by the US Census Bureau, you may want to explore publicly traded companies related to your business idea. To do this you will need the SIC Code which you can find using this Conversion Tool.
