Dr. James held the title of Principal until 1938. In that year the school became the Maryland Teachers College at Bowie, and his title changed to President.Leonidas S. James

Nathanael Pollard Jr.

Dr. Pollard established the University College of Excellence, which provided a model two-year program for all freshman and sophomore students.  The program aimed to ensure that students were grounded in basic skills necessary for success in upper-level programs.

Dr. Wendell Holloway (interim), 1999-2000

Interim President, 1999-2000

Though Holloway served a short time as interim president, he was still able to accomplish notable endeavors.  Holloway successfully restored financial stability to the university's foundation funds and garnered a measure of amity between faculty and administration.

Dr. Calvin W. Lowe, 2000-2006

President, 2000-2006

Dr. Lowe made several improvements centered on increasing funds for the student marching band and drastically enlarging the budget for physical improvement of the campus which beatified the aesthetics and maintenance of the university's scenery.  

Additionally, during his tenure Lowe initiated the construction of the Business and Graduate Center and elevaed the study of education to a respectability that it had not enjoyed since the introduction of the Liberal Arts program in 1963.

Dr. Patricia Pierce Ramsay (interim), 2006

Interim President, 2006

Dr. Ramsey was appointed interim president after serving as provost and vice president for academic affairs.

She now serves as chair of the Department of Natural Sciences, a position she has held since 2004.

Dr. Mickey L. Burnim, the ninth president of Bowie State University, builds on more than 30 years of experience in higher education as he provides the vision and leadership that is propelling the university to higher levels of institutional excellence and academic distinction. President Burnim's tenure at Bowie State, which began in September 2006, has been marked by a steady focus on enhancing academic programs, assuring fiscal integrity, and modernizing facilities to provide state-of-the-art learning environments.

 

Dr. Aminta H. Breaux, July 2017-

Dr. Aminta H. Breaux is the tenth, and first woman, president of BSU, starting in July 2017. She brings more than 30 years of diverse higher education leadership experience to her position as the 10th president of Bowie State University. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated a passion for ensuring student development and success. She is dedicated to building on the legacy and rich history of Maryland’s oldest historically black university.
