What should I know about borrowing, renewals and overdue fines?

First Floor

  • Course Reserves: Readings assigned by the Professor with 3 hours in library reading. Ask at the Circulation Desk.
  • Leisure Reading:  New York Times, both nonfiction + fiction.
  • Entrepreneurship:
  • Human Rights:
  • Graphic Novels:

Second Floor

  • General Stacks: Books you may take from the library, shelved in Alpha-numeric order.
  • Curriculum Lab: Children's books, basic and supplementary educational material to support curriculum planning.

DVD and Media:

All Media items held at the Thurgood Marshall Library can be found in BSU Discovery and are located at the Circulation Desk on the first floor of the library.  We do not currently provide media players. You can request an item by title and call number, and a Circulation staff member will retrieve it for you.  As with all library items, you must have a Bulldog Card to check media items out for 7 (seven) days.

Also available for your use:

  • Dry Erase Kits (multicolored markers and an eraser). These items can be checked out for three (3) hours.
  • Texas Instruments' TI-36X Pro Calculators. These items can be checked out for three (3) hours.

Bring books and your Bulldog Card to the Circulation Desk to check out books on the 1st floor of the library.

How long I can borrow books?

  • Undergraduate Students and Graduate Students
    • May 1st
    • August 1st
    • December 1st

*The due date will advance one month prior:
e.g.: Loans/renewals on 4/2 will have a due date of 8/1
e.g.: Loans/renewals on 3/30 will have a due date of 5/1

  • Faculty and Staff: 180 days

Overdue fines are as follows:

  1. $0.50 per day per item for each day returned after the due date and carry a maximum overdue fine of $15.
  2. An item is considered lost if it is 40 days or more overdue and will incur a replacement charge of $65.

Recall fines are as follows:

  1. $0.50 per day per item for each day returned after the recall date and carry a maximum overdue fine of $15.
  2. An item is considered lost if it is 40 days or more overdue and will incur a replacement charge of $65.

Fine information for USMAI libraries.

Please see the document with fines for the other 16 libraries in the USMAI Consortium linked below.

Sign in to BSU Discovery, and click on My Loan under your account.

Under Loans you can see what you have borrowed, and when the items are due. You can also renew items. NOTE: If you have already renewed the maximum number of times, or if the due date is still ahead, the Renew and Renew All options will not appear.

Click on “RENEW”

When your renew request is accepted, the status changes to “Renewed”

New due date will appear. Confirm the new due date to complete.

*See the previous tab "Renew Books" for sign-in information to BSU Discovery.

There should be a list of libraries (including all institutions you have borrowed from recently). To check on your loans, you'll need to click on each institution individually. For example, try "University of Maryland College Park (UMCP)" to see the books borrowed from UMCP. Once clicked, that page should also let you renew them. If that still isn't working, you may need to contact the library that owns the books or your home institution to find out more.

If we are nearing the end of a semester (especially the short summer semesters), due dates may seem shorter than expected. This is because many libraries use standard due dates like "End of Term/Semester" or "End of Year," depending on your user status (Student/Faculty & Staff). If another user hasn't requested the item, you can generally renew it again within a few weeks of the start of the next semester.
