What is Setting?
What is setting and how does it influence a novel?:
Setting is the surroundings in which an event takes place. The setting of a novel can be tangible, such as the physical whereabouts of an area, or intangible such as the timeframe the event takes place.
Setting comes with consequences that can be good or bad. Certain events or conflicts arise as a direct result of the influence of the setting. A Mercy has several instances where setting is the root cause of internal and external conflict within characters. The popular saying “wrong place, right time” is a perfect example of the impact of setting. All it takes is one time for a character to dwell in area that can affect the outcome of their entire narrative. It could also be argued that any form of conflict that ever takes place is a result of setting. Every physical thing that causes conflict in a novel is a piece of that particular setting, or every intangible thing that causes conflict is the result of being in that particular setting, therefore the setting is impacting the plot nonetheless.
