ENGL 236 Introduction to Literature LibGuide: The Elements of Fiction

Connection to Each Chapters Events

Connection to Each Chapter’s Events:

Chapter 7- Toni Morrison structures chapter 7 in a way where she introduces Lina’s advice to Florens and then tells the story of Florens meeting Widow Ealing. This helps the reader to make a connection with where she begins her interest in religion for the rest of the story.

Chapter 8- It is ironic that Morrison would include the back story of Sorrow and giving the reader a glimpse of her “new beginning” after trauma in the past.

Chapter 9- The moment we have all been waiting for… the romantic reunion of the Blacksmith and Florens, or is it what we have been waiting for? This anticlimactic ending definitely draws the reader back in to figure out what is this new meaning of relationships and what happens now? Ask yourself why do you think she placed these stories together and towards the end?
