The American Community Survey – Education Tabulation (ACS-ED) is an annual, nationwide survey designed to provide communities with reliable and timely demographic, social, economic, and housing data. The U.S. Census Bureau implemented the ACS in 2005 as a replacement for the decennial census long form, and NCES collaborates with the U.S. Census Bureau to create a variety of custom ACS data files that describe the condition of school-age children in the U.S., states, and school districts. The custom NCES files are updated annually and based on ACS five-year period estimates.

NCES relies on information about school location to help construct school-based surveys, support program administration, identify associations with other types of geographic entities, and to help investigate the social and spatial context of education. EDGE creates and assigns address geocodes (estimated latitude/latitude values) and other geographic indicators to public schools, public local education agencies, private schools, and postsecondary schools. The geographic data are provided as shapefiles, and basic attribute data are available as Excel and SAS tables.

Google Scholar

Google Scholar

Google Scholar is a variation of Google. It is designed specifically for scholarly literature searches.

Advantages

It’s free to use.
It has a simple, familiar interface that works much like regular Google.
It finds scholarly books, articles, and conference papers from a wide range of disciplines.

Disadvantages

Coverage is not comprehensive. It is a good first place to start researching a paper, but not comprehensive enough to be the only place you look.
Criteria used for selecting “scholarly” materials is not given. Search results can be a mixture of articles and books as well as unpublished manuscripts, course syllabi, and high school term papers, so you must critically evaluate what you find.
Results are not always full-text or free like regular Google. Often the link for an article will take you to the publishers website where the full article is available only if you buy it.
